<Roxy Lanes
Damn, I'm feeling old! I look at this picture of 50th Street & Broadway taken in '64 and I actually remember this place.
I remember the old busses with their cushioned seats. I remember the old subway kiosks. I collect the yellow & black
street signs. I even remember the bowling alley on 50th street. It was called the Roxy Lanes and it was in a basement.
Dark and cool during the summer, when the guy flicked a switch, the lanes came alive. Me and Noah Baron put on
our rented shoes. Bowling was 35ยข a game back in those days. The black balls with the yellow specks were for us kids,
I found out recently that Noah's dad Harry has cancer and it looks bad. Back in the 1960s he taught me and Noah how
to bowl and he's a pretty cool guy. He worked for Hot Rod magazine in the '60s and one summer, probably '65 or '66
he drove out to Long Island in a brand spanking new Plymouth Barracuda! No one had even seen this car as it wouldn't
be in the dealerships till September. We slept in the car with sleeping bags. Too cool for words, us, in a '66 Cuda!
